On 26 May 2025, Hubert Aiwanger, Bavarian State Minister for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy and Deputy Prime Minister, visited NXP's Munich site for the first time. In discussions with the site management team – represented by Manuel Alves Mendes – the Minister learned about ongoing development projects and NXP's role in the European microelectronics initiative IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest). The visit highlighted the importance of targeted European funding programs in strengthening technological sovereignty and the role of innovation hubs such as Munich in achieving this.
IPCEI is a key EU industrial policy instrument designed to promote important technologies such as microelectronics. In the face of growing geopolitical tensions and the ongoing deglobalization of supply chains, the objective of strengthening Europe's technological independence is becoming increasingly important.
Backed by €8.1 billion from the European Commission and an additional €13.7 billion in industry investment, the IPCEI program aims to raise Europe’s share of global chip production to 20 percent. An important milestone was reached in the third quarter of 2023, when fourteen EU Member States started to implement national funding agreements.
NXP is playing a leading role in the IPCEI and is demonstrating its long-term commitment to strengthening Europe's semiconductor capabilities through targeted investment in Munich and active participation in projects in four countries: Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, and Romania. Underpinned by a clear 'think big' approach, IPCEI enables NXP to make significant triple-digit million euro investments in Europe to secure and expand the region's competitiveness in the semiconductor sector.
As part of the initiative's three core workstreams – Sense, Think and Communicate – NXP is making key contributions to the development of critical technologies. These include next-generation radar architectures, 6G communications solutions, advanced 5nm processing technologies, ultra-wideband systems, post-quantum cryptography, and RISC-V technologies. Many of these developments are being driven from Munich, underlining the site's strategic importance within NXP's global R&D network.
“I would like to thank NXP for its strong commitment to Munich. This project reinforces Bavaria’s position as a leading hub of innovation. Microelectronics is a strategic field for the future. Without high-performance semiconductors, technologies such as autonomous driving, digitalisation, artificial intelligence, and 6G mobile communications would not be possible. That is why it is both right and necessary to actively support such key projects. Only by developing and safeguarding our own technologies in Bavaria and Europe can we remain competitive in the long term and reduce our dependence on global supply chains.”
Hubert Aiwanger, Bavarian Minister for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, and Deputy Minister-President
During his visit, the Minister received detailed insights into core development programs, including the advancement of high-performance 5nm processors for automotive applications. NXP also presented its work on next-generation digital radar systems, targeting substantial technological progress by 2030. The focus is on innovations in digital modulation, next-generation millimeter-wave integrated circuits (mmICs), as well as systemic advancements in software, AI and ML optimisation, and energy-efficient low-power technologies. In addition, NXP is establishing an AI Competence Center in Munich to become a trusted pioneer in artificial intelligence. The center will provide dedicated services across all business lines and play a key role in advancing NXP's edge AI portfolio.
“Minister Aiwanger's visit underlined the strategic importance of the Munich site within the European semiconductor strategy. We were able to demonstrate how our teams contribute to Europe's technological competitiveness through targeted development projects.”
